Maybe you‘ve tried having a smoothie for breakfast and then by mid-morning wondered where all the snacks have gone. You‘re not the only one. Many breakfast smoothies which look healthy are, in fact, just blended up fruit and fruit juice. Delicious but not necessarily filling. This is where many people get disappointed. Feeling they‘re making a healthy choice they‘re still starving before lunch time and flinging handfuls of nuts at themselves. Over the years I‘ve observed that the smoothies which promote weight loss are not always the lowest calorie offerings. They are the smoothies that blend protein, fiber and healthy fat in such a way as to starve off any hunger pangs.
That‘s the type of thing my guide is centered around. I‘m not going to be giving you fashionable green smoothies with all kinds of hard-to-pronounce ingredients; rather, I‘m going to show you easy, economical breakfasts smoothies that you can follow along with.
Starting your day with a healthy breakfast for weight loss can help control hunger and support your fitness goals.

Why Smoothies Can Help With Weight Loss
Part of why smoothies have taken off in popularity is the ease with which they can be prepared. Let‘s face it, no matter how organized you are in the mornings (if you are organized or have time), most of us are rushed to get off to work or to get the kids to school. That‘s assuming we get that far before we realize we‘re hungry. A smoothie can fix that problem.
When made correctly, it provides:
- Protein for fullness
- Fiber for better digestion
- Nutrients present in fruits and vegetables
- A stable energy flow through the morning
The key is in the words “when made correctly.”
A smoothie with juice, flavored yogurt and other sweeteners that we can put in the blender could have more sugar than a can of soft drink. So ingredient choice is important!
What I Look for in a Breakfast Smoothie
When I make a smoothie just for weight loss, I look at three factors. It must have enough protein so I‘m full. It needs to have some fiber in it. And third, it needs to be tasty enough that I want to have it the next day. A smoothie that doesn‘t hit all three factors is typically not in my arsenal.
The Berry Smoothie I Recommend Most Often
This is the smoothie I recommend most often for the beginner. It’s easy, inexpensive, and almost impossible to screw up.
Ingredients
- 1 cup frozen mixed berries
- ½ cup Greek yogurt
- 1 scoop vanilla protein powder
- 1 cup unsweetened almond milk
The frozen berries yields a more substantial texture than a thin smoothie. The Greek yogurt and protein powder are enough to make it feel more like breakfast than a snack.
My Favorite Smoothie for Busy Workdays
On crazy mornings, getting there is most important. Then I usually stick with a banana oat smoothie.
Ingredients
- 1 banana
- ¼ cup rolled oats
- 1 cup milk
- ½ cup Greek yogurt
- Cinnamon
This is incredible how much of a difference the oats make. When they are removed the smoothie feels much lighter, and with them included the smoothie is much more satisfying and can keep hunger at bay until lunch.
The Green Smoothie That Doesn‘t Taste Like Vegetables
Many people think of green smoothies and immediately decide not to drink one because they believe it will taste of spinach. In fact, once combined with other ingredients it is hard to taste at all.
Ingredients
- 1 handful spinach
- 1 banana
- 1 tablespoon chia seeds
- 1 cup almond milk
- ½ cup Greek yogurt
The banana does most of the work when it comes to flavor. You‘ll receive the nutritional advantages of greens without having to gulp down a salad.
For People Who Constantly Feel Hungry
One of the most common complaints I hear from people trying to lose weight is this:
- Has breakfast, but is hungry again within an hour.
- And, too often, it is just not a satisfying breakfast enough.
- This is where a peanut butter banana smoothie may be of assistance.
Ingredients
- 1 banana
- 1 tb of natural peanut butter
- 1 scoop protein powder
- 1 cup milk
The total fat from the peanut butter combined with the protein makes for a more filling breakfast.

A Smoothie for Coffee Lovers
In the mornings, I can even have a day when I don‘t feel like having breakfast.
I just want coffee.
But when it doesn‘t work, or when I need a third eye, I will also bring in a little of everything.
Ingredients
- 1 cup chilled coffee
- One scoop chocolate protein powder.
- 1 cup almond milk
- Ice
This gives you your caffeine fix while providing enough protein to make it a feasible breakfast choice.
The Mistake That Makes Most Smoothies Less Effective
It is a common misconception in the minds of many that the inclusion of extra healthful ingredients will only help to improve the quality of the smoothie.
That’s not always true.
I‘ve seen smoothies that contain:
- Two bananas
- Peanut butter
- Honey
- Fruit juice
- Granola
- Flavored yogurt
Every ingredient sounds healthy.
Can produce a breakfast with thousands of calories more than any meal you can buy at a drive through.
A good simpler way is to keep things simple.
Choose:
- One protein source
- One or two fruits
- A source of fiber
- A healthy liquid base
That’s usually enough.
My Simple Smoothie Prep Routine
One thing that really helps me to be consistent with my meal prep is doing as much prep work as possible in advance. On Sundays, I prepare freezer packs for the week.
Each bag contains:
- Fruit
- Spinach (if needed)
- Chia seeds
When 7:30AM comes along I just add some fluids and blend it.
The whole process will take no more than five minutes.
That one small change overcomes one of the largest obstacles with healthy eating: a complete lack of time.
Or make it a full meal — see our meal replacement smoothie recipes.
Which Smoothie do you want?
It really depends upon what your struggle is. If craving hunger is it for you, go with the peanut butter banana smoothie. If, on the other hand, it is the feeling of wanting something refreshing and less caloric, the berry smoothie will work great. If you need to get more vegetables in your diet, the green smoothie can help. Finally, if you can‘t quite make it through the day without your morning (or afternoon) cup of joe, the coffee protein smoothie might be what you need!
Final Thoughts
The best breakfast smoothie recipes for weight loss aren‘t ever complicated. You don‘t need to buy expensive superfoods, trendy powders or ingredients you‘ve never heard of. Typically, the best smoothies are based on real, everyday foods which give you protein, fiber and enough nutrition to get you through the morning. Weight loss really isn‘t about the perfect smoothie. It‘s about habits you can continue with for months and years. If having a healthy smoothie makes your mornings easier and prevents you from reaching for the less healthy food choices, then you are already heading in the right direction.
